Moonbase

BUILD. CONNECT. CONQUER.

Build your moonbase and mine it for the resources you need to raise an army. Connect to other players and find out who you can trust, who you must fear, and who must fear you. Conquer the map with your clan.

Moonbase is a real-time strategy game played on a shared map against other people. It runs continuously, whether or not you are online: upgrades finish, research completes, units come off the line, and a movement launched at a neighbour is on its way in real time until it lands.

Your moonbase

You hold a plot on the map, and it mines whichever of the four resources — oxygen, water, iron and helium — it happens to carry. Everything costs all four, so no plot is self-sufficient and every neighbour has something you do not. That is what makes the other players matter.

Nine structures stand on your base from the first minute and each can be upgraded: a Silo that sets what you can store, a Crane and a Lab that make work finish sooner, a Factory that unlocks unit types, a Radar, a Shield, a Bunker that hides what a raid cannot take, a Radio that decides how large a clan you can lead, and a Lander that lets you found the next base.

Helium is the pressure

Every structure and every unit consumes helium, every hour, for as long as it exists. Growth has a ceiling and it also has a floor: a moonbase that cannot pay works the debt off in units, destroying its own army in proportion until the figures balance. Units reinforcing you are on that bill too.

What you can send

Attack a neighbour, and bring home whatever survives with whatever it could carry off. Reinforce one, leaving your units at their base until either of you sends them home. Supply one with resources. Transfer units to another base of your own, for good. And recall what you sent.

A movement travels at the speed of its slowest unit, consumes helium the whole way, and appears on the map to anyone whose radar it has entered.

You do not get to know

You never learn what is inside another player's moonbase, and you never learn what is in an attack, until it lands. Your radar tells you that something is on its way and never what it is. That is the game rather than a limit on it, and every decision in Moonbase is made on less than you would like.

Clans

Get your Radio to level 3 and you can found a clan, name it, and invite other players into it. Clans have leaders and officers, their own private chats, their own rankings, and a size limit that grows with the leader's radios.

An officer sees more than a member does: what is at each clan-mate's base, every battle fought at one, and an attack aimed at a clan-mate while it is still on its way — within their own radar, never borrowed from anybody else's.

Games begin and end

Moonbase is played in separate games, and a game has a life. It opens for players to join, runs, closes to newcomers, and then finishes — and the clan on top when it finishes wins it.

Winning earns a medal, which is kept against your account. The world you won it in is not: progress belongs to the game it happened in. That is the shape of the game rather than a limitation of it — every game starts everybody level, and nobody arrives ten thousand hours ahead of you.

Where to get it

Moonbase is in active development and closed testing on Android, iOS and Windows. It is not yet openly available, and there is no public sign-up.
